It's been a while since I've been on here, but I will have more submissions soon to come!
I'm attending Old Dominion University part time and working full time as a manager and graphic designer. Life is good. Things are stable.
Spurred from recent thought and many recreational activities... I feel more at ease with life. Whenever I think something isn't going right, I think: Eh, things could be worse.
I like to think I have it pretty well off compared to third world county folk, even though I still technically live below the poverty line in the US. I'm appreciative now more than ever, and I wish more people I know were.
Back home, recently I visited the buddhist village/retreat in the mountains, (completely by accident). One night, I was a little inebriated, and I went to visit the statue in the village at night for the first time. I left my phone there by accident, and I went back the next day to get it.  I went with my friend around noon on a Sunday and there was no-one to be found. Every door to every building was completely open, unlocked, and vacant. There must have been 20 cars in their little parking lot, but no one was there. Finally we knocked on the front door of a little cottage, a woman answered and asked if I was Rachel. I was shocked when she knew my name as she quickly replied that there was a phone left there (and I remember that I had my name on the back of my phone). She lead me into the main office and handed it to me. About the time she'd finished talking to us, a man in athletic gear came jogging down the path and seemed more than excited to see people. We asked about how they started this village, and what had provoked the idea of starting it. He talked to us for almost an hour about how peaceful there community was. He wasn't even mad that me (a total stranger) was perched on his statue the night previous. He said everything in the village was open to the public aside from the woods behind it. He gave us a handmade brochure and insisted we join. He spoke with a slow, clear, soft tone, and he seemed happy about everything.
I love enlightened people.
It gives me hope.
I admire it so much, and have only dreamed of reaching it one day.
I feel like I'm closer now than I ever have been. I have a few mismal fears, like losing my job and not being able to get another one, and spiders still freak me out. But I really don't have any pressing desires.
That's a part of Buddhism I really believe in, letting go of all desires. Looking at the life with the glass half full.
End rant.

On a side note: Is the statement "Once you go black you never go back" true?
For me it is.
I love the culture, the 'realness' so much.
I live in Norfolk, Virginia where the population is over %60 percent African American-
And must I say, I am a kid and Norfolk is my candy store!
